William Martin, MD
Dr. William Martin graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1981. He completed his residency in 1984 at In His Image Family Medicine (formerly known as the Oral Roberts University Family Practice Residency) in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Martin has practiced in rural Oklahoma, repaying a National Health Service Corps Scholarship obligation, and in Maine, before moving to North Carolina in 1993. He helped found and grow a practice in Waxhaw where he has worked since 1995. Along the way, Dr. Martin held leadership posts including membership on hospital staff committees, serving as Chief of Staff of his rural Oklahoma hospital and as lead physician at Waxhaw Family and Sports Medicine. Dr. Martin gained expertise in diabetes care as well as cardiovascular disease and stroke prevention. He maintains an interest in nutrition and has used alternative treatments in addition to traditional therapies for his patients. He feels that a healthy diet and lifestyle not only help maintain health, but move patients from "feeling okay" to feeling great. Striving to ensure patients grasp their health status and reasons for recommended medications and therapies, Dr. Martin enjoys understanding his patients in their larger life context. The dynamics of family relationships and circumstances help frame the care he provides. Dr. Martin met his wife, Susan, also a physician, while in college. They have been married for nearly 40 years and have 8 children and 9 grandchildren. They love walking, reading, and spending time with extended family.
