Self-Insured Companies Help Push Health Care Innovations
Companies in industries from retail and tech to manufacturing and agriculture are getting into a new line of business — health care. They're doing so by effectively becoming their own health insurers. Instead of purchasing coverage from a traditional health insurance company, they're paying their employees' medical claims directly. The share of companies "self-insuring" like this has grown by more than one-third since 2010, according to a new study from the Employee Benefit Research Institute.
