DaVita HealthCare's Kent Thiry: Improving Clinical Outcomes
DaVita HealthCare Partners’ CEO Kent Thiry’s favorite business tip is simple: “begin with the end in mind.” Thiry does as he says, having started his career in 1983 as a healthcare consultant for Bain before taking over Vivra, another dialysis company, and eventually becoming DaVita’s CEO in 1999. His next goal is improving DaVita’s clinical outcomes for the 16th year in a row.
The best business advice he ever received is a little different, but it has impacted his career just as much. “They don’t care how much you know,” he tells FORBES, “until they know how much you care.” It’s a fitting mantra for the CEO of a healthcare company, and one he appears to take into all aspects of his career. The most important quality Thiry looks for in a job candidate isn’t education or background, he says. It’s emotional intelligence.
